Welcome to this short introduction to Air Cargo and Air Mail. Even though I have been working in or around the air cargo industry for 20 years already, I seldomly have to tell how the air cargo process works from scratch to someone who does not know anything about it yet. Until there was this new colleague who really needed to understand the process. Then I found out it is very hard, or almost impossible, to find general information on air cargo basics on the internet, or elsewhere in the poublic domain. Most information inside cargo companies handles only parts of the process, and is for the largest part aimed at people already working in the air cargo industry. So apparently I had think this out for myself.
That is why this site has been set up. The purpose is to provide general information or a framework on the setup of air cargo processes, for people new to the business. Of course details of the processes will in the end vary per company.
Are you looking for a more general explanation, e.g. for a school, then take a look here at "How Stuff Works" or here at Wikipedia. A nice video showing the air cargo process from beginning to end can be found here on TeacherTube (elsewhere on my site you will find several videos as well, by the way).

Hi Fahiye, well that depends on a lot of things. First thing is your current experience in the business. If you have none, you'd probably best start to google "how to start an air cargo business" to gather the first basic issues to solve there. I would then advise to first gain experience as an employee with an existing air cargo forwarder or courier, do the IATA Cargo Agents training and get a certificate, and then decide how to find your local 'niche'. My question: How does an agent make its money in air cargo? The air cargo company has its various fees which are charged to customers. Do I add an extra fee or do I receive some sort of percentage from shipments?

@Coriice Hi Thank you! Well, basically there are two kinds of agents:
Delete(1) the GSA - General Sales Agent earning money by representing the cargo airline and selling the airline's aircraft capacity against a fee or commission, and
(2) the Air Cargo Forwarder earning money by buying capacity from the airline (or its GSA) and reselling this capacity to his/her customers, with a margin and often also with an advantage on the buying side because he/she can consolidate the cargo from several customers and thus avoid the higher basic costs for smaller single shipments, and perhaps even get a volume discount.
If you want to become an agent yourself, I would advise to first gain experience as an employee and perhaps get a basic training then, bcse it can be a tough and complicated business. I will try and make a page about the dynamics of selling and buying air cargo someday.

Hi Wouter Knee Dock, thx, and did you know the release of the new Apple products are always good news for the air cargo business as well? Although not always for their other customers... Distribution of the iPad3 over the last few weeks (mainly done by DHL) drove the air cargo prizes from Asia as much as 20% up! Can I ask, though customs clearance (documentation) usually done by broker or forwarder, which party actually brings the physical cargo for customs inspection at the airport? Will that be Cargo handling agent/operator?

Hi Paul thanks for the positive feedback. Indeed as far as I know the customs inspection at the airport will in most cases take place by customs in the cargo handling agent's warehouse, based on the declared airline manifest or the import or export declaration of the broker or forwarder. Otherwise in any other warehouse or distri centre as long as the goods are still under customs supervision ("bonded warehouse" with sealed road transport from/to the airline's handling agent).

Hi @TongZhou thx for your response. Temperature controlled cargo are mainly perishables (flowers, vegetables, meat, fish, fruits, etc.) or pharmaceuticals (vaccines, medical drugs, serums, plasma, etc.). Processes are described in the IATA Perishable Cargo Regulation (PCR). Storage time in a temperature controlled warehouse (if needed) depends on the connection time of the cargo at the airport and the insulation equipment used. Priority of the shipments will naturally be high esp. in comparison to general cargo, but of course this priority as well as the equipment and infrastructure needed must be paid for. Packing and labelling of these shipments are prescribed, and shipment temperature will be monitored. If you google e.g. "air cargo cold chain" or "air cargo cold chain priority" you will find quite some information... I hope this answer will do for here.

It's a long gap since then..I had to taken a break to raise my kids since then..can I start fresh..holding the past degree..or do I have to do some carrier related courses..
Hi Sucharita, it's bit hard to say 'from a distance', and it depends on the kind kind of job you're looking for of course, but the introductory course with one year experience looks like a good start to seacrh for a new job still... try to get an invitation or connection at a company you would like to work for, and see what they say about it. Basically not too much has changed in the industry processes since 2005 except for the more extensive use of e-freight and Cargo2000 (see my pages about this).

ReplyDeleteHi well to name a few prop engined cargo aircraft (depending on required payload & dimensions of course): Airbus A400M, Lockheed Martin "Hercules" C130J, Antonov An-32, EADS CASA C-295, Alenia C-27J "Spartan", de Havilland Canada DHC-4 "Caribou", Fokker F27-400/700 etc. ; and of course some older still flying types like the Douglas DC-3, DC-6 etc....

Hi Minhnn, well basically the cargo airline's role in the supply chain is the same as the normal (passenger based) airlines, as mentioned elsewhere on this site. The difference is of course that a full cargo airline will fly with full freighters only, and therefor will also be able to handle bigger volumes and bigger pieces of cargo on the routes they fly. Besides that, you will find they fly partly (or completely) different routes than the passenger based airlines, because their network decisions are purely based on cargo revenues, and do not have to consider the passengers needs or revenues...

ReplyDeleteHi, Airfreight rates of airlines are usually structured as a Fixed fee (covering basic costs for shipment handling) + a Variable fee (e.g. priced as a minimum + per kg fee, or in weight-breaks, with a maximum for heavy weights). Several surcharges can/will occur e.g. for fuel, security, etc. Often these rates structures will be reflected in the pricing of your forwarder ; the forwarder can often negotiate better rates because they consolidate volumes, and of course they add value (at separate charges) by taking care of your shipments for you. Plse also check the page “Forwarding Out” for further information and I will try and make a separate page for air cargo pricing…

Hi Annie, yes of course, the processes are mapped on the process pages (http://air-cargo-how-it-works.blogspot.nl/ ; or go to the upper right of this page > GO TO... > Air cargo process pages). Even if I would know it all, it's a bit hard to tell you here what would be needed to start an air freight office. If I were in your place I would start taking an IATA course (alone or with a colleague) to become a licensed air cargo agent, or else hire one or two licensed employees to help you start. And also start checking out your local market requirements like licences needed etc....

DeleteHi Erma, yes depending on the situation e.g. national or international deliveries, local handling charges and/or customs charges may occur. It is very important to read the general conditions and check your logistic supplier whether additional costs may occur before shipping.

I am actually from Ghana but live here in Dallas Texas, so my niche market will be focused on the Ghanaian and African community here in the Metropolis. Even though I know starting such a business I have to register with my county office and take a cargo agent class with the IATA (International Air Transport Association), I am at a loss as to which airline to deal with or which international air freight/cargo company to cooperate with for fair price quotes as a third party business. Can you please advise me on such companies or how to deal with airlines in that respect. I will also welcome any suggestions from anybody or company here on this post. Thank for the opportunity.
Hi Edward, thanks for your reaction. At the IATA class they will tell you exactly how you can select and approach airlines on the routes between the countries and/or stations e.g. between Dallas, Texas, USA and Accra, Ghana. Once you know the airline, as a forwarder you can approach their local sales rep / gsa at the station and request rates. The more volume and the more regular your cargo offering, the better the rates will be you can negotiate...

1. Airline has freighters and belly-cargo. Is the cargo network here about "routing" if freighters or "scheduling" if belly? Or else?
2. One SME wrote: "For our key focus in the RO area we have a good road-map helping us making sure that we in a given market attract and select the best contributing shipments and this often in longer term customer commitment engagements (including e.g. multi-way selling: you help me on constrained routes and I help you on un-constrained routes)."
What does he mean? Explain please...
